Sophea Lim is living the American dream as an aspiring executive producer at her local television station. But at the home she shares with her Cambodian mother and grandmother, her success is measured by how soon she can find a husband and how well she prepares a spring roll. While Sophea embraces her new life in America, her elders cling to memories of their old life in the Cambodian royal family. They continue to live in the shadow of the genocide that killed two million Cambodians, including their husbands. Turmoil erupts when younger sister Ravy encourages Sophea to move out of the house and forsake her cultural responsibility to take care of her elders. Will Sophea abandon the ones she loves most? Can her mother and grandmother find meaning and relevance in their new country? "The Immigrant Princess" is a poignant love story about three generations of spirited women learning to navigate a world that challenges their core values and traditions.

The Immigrant Princess eBook Variny Yim

It is rare to find the works of the Cambodian-American writer in the U.S. book market. But, Variny Yim stands out to be great with her debut novel. The Immigrant Princess touches my heart with its amazing entertaining stories and its interesting educational contents. To entertain the readers, Variny puts four ladies of a three-generation family in the center of the stage to create amazing controversies emerging from the generational difference; children, Sophea and Ravy, stand on one side whereas mom and grandma, Cookies and Chas Mai, on the other. The four ladies are strongly attached to each other with love and care but contrasted themselves due to their different worldview. As the immigrant to a new country, mom and grandma carry with them the value of the Cambodian standard and impose it on the children, but they face a strong opposition from the latter since they try to adapt the American life. On this basis, Variny smartly creates the love-hate scenes to draw my excitement and curiosity.

Despite the moving flow, I am surprised with some exceptions: First, when Sophea exposes her sex desire openly and aggressively to her boyfriend, Tim, during the night date at her home. This is uncommon in the real life. The Cambodian females are generally reserved vis-a-vis sex despite her consent. Second, when Sophea's grandma and mom voluntarily vacate their home overnight for Sophea to be free with her boyfriend. Most Cambodian families would not be so kind like that. And third, when Sophea's mom and aunt bombard Tim, Michael and Adam with harsh questions regarding their respective job, income, and intention vis-a-vis Sophea and Ravy. The man who approaches the Cambodian girl should not expect that kind of hardship from the girl's family. In general, the Cambodian families treat their guest nicely and kindly. Unless they found that the guy is malicious, then they will do their best the protect the girl.

In addition, the book is resourceful with educational contents about Cambodia and her people. This includes art, culture, tradition and history. My most take away from this book is the cultural shock of the immigrant when settling in the Unites States. Parents and children are still struggling these days to understand each other and to maintain peace and harmony in every family. Parents and children could learn from this book the different view of the old and the young generation as the mean to improve their mutual understanding and to build an harmonious living family. It is also a good reference for the American audience.

The Immigrant Princess eBook Variny Yim Reviews

This is an enjoyable read that has a great balance of topics to keep you reading fast and wanting to know more. The insights into Cambodian history, culture, and politics were particularly interesting coming from the author's perspective, and you come out of the book feeling like you actually learned something- not always the case with a novel. If you have any interests in Cambodia's history or Asian culture, this is a great book to learn from while being entertained. The "serious content' is all well-balanced with drama, occasionally laugh-out-loud humor, and a very interesting, sometimes surprising storyline.
Having read only e-books for the past four years, I had to search for a bookmark when I purchased this paperback. That proved to be completely unnecessary as once I began reading this adventure I couldn’t put it down, and finished the entire story in one sitting!

In full disclosure, I know these 4 wonderful ladies. The only thing more entertaining than their character portrayals in ‘The Immigrant Princess’, are the same four characters in real life! By weaving historical events and significance of Cambodia’s troubled and tragic history with the modern day conflicts of family and culture, Ms. Yim presents an entertaining yet enlightening framework of the Norodom and Lim families. The dynamics of tradition vs. modern, loyalty vs. independence, young and old, and past and present are all captured brilliantly in this hilarious yet heartening read. As someone caught in the center of each of these struggles herself, Ms. Yim captures the perspective of Sophea in a way that is both refreshing and empathetic. You will at the same time both cheer for her, yet feel sorry for her. As she navigates to find balance and clarity both personally and professionally, the reader is led down a seductive and captivating path as Sophea ‘grows and develops’ into her own woman. I can only imagine what adventures await her, and whether for a summer day on the beach or winter evening in front of the fireplace, (or perhaps while contemplating that Chinese buffet down by the mall), I highly recommend ‘The Immigrant Princess’ for readers of all ages and cultures. 5 stars Ms. Yim, keep up the great work!
This book was a delightful experience that thrust me into the magical world of Cambodian culture and history. I loved learning about all of the splendor and beauty of the Cambodia culture and royal family. Its fun to learn about a culture vastly different than my own and this book really was able to transport me from time and place to visualize Cambodia. Ill admit I did not know much about the Cambodian culture and history before reading this book and I was fascinated. The struggle to find the right man is something every girl can understand. Princess or not.. We all struggle to find a person that not only gets along with our family’s quirks but can appreciate and our family’s customs. Coming from a person who’s family customs and my boyfriends are vastly different I can appreciate the dating intricacies. Sophea’s dramatic plight to find the right man was captivating and extremely relatable, every woman will be able to see some of her own past or current man struggles while reading about Sophea’s. All the while I was rooting for her to succeed and become the bad ass, strong Cambodian women I know she was without losing herself along the way.
